"Harry Potter" series made over $1.6 billion in disc sales

The final film in the mega-grossing series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," shattered box office records last weekend after debuting to north of $478 million worldwide.
Singer Rihanna performs on NBC's 'Today' show in New York

But that's just a taste of the spoils to come if the bespectacled wizard's performance on DVD and Blu-ray is any indication.

Thus far, the first seven films in Warner Bros. boy-wizard franchise have banked some $1.63 billion in domestic disc sales, according to new estimates from the media research firm IHS Screen Digest.

That heady number doesn't even count the additional $150 million that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1" is still expected to generate on home video in North America. Also, importantly, it doesn't take into account the hundreds of millions of dollars more the series has grossed in foreign home entertainment rentals and sales.

All told, the first six films in the series shipped an estimated 89 million video units in their initial releases to the U.S. video market during the past eight years, IHS reports.

Theatrically, "Potter" has lapped "James Bond" as the most lucrative franchise in movie history, having already grossed more than $6.8 billion worldwide through Tuesday.

Why is Obama giving Libya to the Russians?

The opinions expressed are his own.
With President Obama’s Libya policy staggering from one embarrassment to another, last week he and Secretary of State Clinton outdid themselves. They publicly welcomed Russia’s effort to insert itself as a mediator, an act of such strategic myopia that it must leave even Moscow’s leadership speechless.

Listen: Blink-182 Return with 'Up All Night' Single

After a six-year wait, Blink-182 fans finally have some new music. The pop-punk veterans unveiled "Up All Night," the first single from their self-produced new album, Thursday night (July 14).

"Up All Night" sounds as ripe for a stadium sing-along as any previous Blink single, with guitarists Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge singing, "And all these demons/They keep me up all night," before Travis Barker pummels his drum kit and the soaring chorus kicks in. The verse and bridge riffs retain their palm-muted glory, but the track's main riff is much heavier than anything in previous Blink singles.

Hoppus also announced the name and release date of the album via his Google+ account on Friday morning (July 15). He posted: "The new blink-182 album will be titled "Neighborhoods," and is tentatively scheduled for release September 27nd!!"

The singer has been using his new Google+ account to connect with fans, answering questions and even leaking clips of the new single during public video chats, or "hangouts," leading up to the track's release. He also debuted the "Up All Night" single artwork Thursday afternoon on Google+

Katy Perry : Follows Lady Gaga In Mermaid Trend

Of all the potential beefs in the music industry, the mermaid does not seem like the most likely of the instigator. But that may change. Shortly after Lady Gaga teasing her that she was a mermaid's alter ego, Micro, may be "born" in the next music video, Katy Perry tweeted picture of himself dressed as a mermaid.
"PROPER board FTW # itswhatArielwoulddo!," He wrote on Twitter, exhibiting a second entry into the phenomenon of internet boards, where people post a photo of himself lying face down, with their arms at their sides, in an awkward location.
In the photo, Perry performed in full mermaid dress: He wore a purple wig with hairpins starfish, one aqua and pink shimmering mermaid tail with matching bra top. He was surrounded by glossy paper and the water acts as a buffer bridge looms in the background. There has been no official word on the purpose of shooting.
While not commenting on any similarities Gaga mermaids, creative director, Laurieann Gibson, did make reference to it on Twitter just hours after Perry tweeted a picture of herself. "Proud of my # 1 artist in the world @ Ladygaga vision & passion even if they try to steal the tail there is only a Mermaid. Swim On!" Gibson writes.
Gaga certainly have tried to make a mermaid phase occur for some time now. He was originally introduced fans to Micro Twitter earlier this summer and wear a mermaid for her performance in "Le Grand Journal." Although he apparently nixed the treatment of a mermaid is rumored to "Edge of Glory" his video, he said the talk show last week that Taiwan Micro Fiber is "incubation" and may appear in the video for the fourth yet-abrupt Born This Way single.
Of course, both Gaga and Perry will be the first pop star who thinks using mythological creatures to their sets. Madonna's black and white clip for 1989 is "Cherish," directed by the late fashion photographer Herb Ritts, Madonna splashes in the waves with mermen. Mermaid popping up elsewhere in pop culture as well, as a major plot point in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and the new novel, including a forthcoming book by the "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer.
